SOME CRASH COURSE DRUMMING TIPS FOR DEVELOPING CREATIVITY
I used to playa game with my Lead Guitar player Nicky where He would play a guitar riff andI would have to play it back on the drums, exactly as he played it, then I wouldplay a roll and fill and he would have to play it back, we did this until oneof us made a mistake and made an ass of it. This is a great Fun exercisethat develops your ability to LISTEN ! which is the KEY to creative playing.I've got students who'll say "But I do Listen" and I'll give them a guitar riffto copy and they're lost, because they have not trained themselves to really LISTEN. Try it Get a friend or Band member to play something,a simple melody and you play it back Exactly as they played it...except on thedrums...You'll have Created your First Musically Created Drum Fill. Thesecret to every accomplished musician is their ability to Listen, The secondyou stop listening to the music, when playing , is the moment you,re playingon your own.
