BEATKEEPER OR CREATIVE DRUMMER

I believe there are two types of drummers, there are THE BEATKEEPERS and then there are the CREATIVE DRUMMERS  who play the drums as a musical instrument. Which catagory do you think that youfit into, if you are a drummer that is ?
If you listen you can hear the differencewhen a drummer plays with and is sympathetic to the music or just fillsthe space with a roll. I watched a drumming video the other night and if youfollowed this guys interpretation of music (sarcasm) the only band you would befit to play with  is some Marching outfit, ok if marching is your thing, but there was no mention of music in his whole video, it was a series of exercisesdesigned to bore the shit out of you....! Drums were never an instrument madeto be played on their own......so why teach them that way, where's the music?

The reason this happens is
SIMPLE .......most drummers are never taught the basics of music, as it relates to otherinstruments. Drummers exercises are the equivalent to learning the Scales on thePiano or the Guitar and only that. Rythmic exercises have nothing to do withplaying music......You got more chance of winning the lottery 3 times in a rowthan finding a piece of music that any of these exercises will enhance or evenfit. Brilliant for doing a solo, but you ain't gonna be doing that all night whenyou're on stage...and that really is about the only importance I personallyput on these kind of boring drum exercises, they're good for solos and about 0.5 percent of the Performance.

This is the reason I am in the process of making a series of drum trainer videos of my own, and the first one will be for beginners or for drummers who havenever learned to be creative. If you learn to play the drums on your own, onan acoustic kit in your garage or bedroom etc. without ever knowing how musicis constructed, you are not going to developa creative style of your own and willonly learn to FILL SPACES .....some drummers never learn music, and it shines like a beacon when they play.........acreative drummer will very rarely repeat the same run round the drums, music is not written that way. The next time you listen to a band or music, listento the drummer, see if you can tell whether he or she is a just a BEATKEEPER or a CREATIVE DRUMMER.
Listen for the same drum rolls being repeated over and over like they werebeing pulled from some reservoir of pre-learned rolls, thats a
BEATKEEPER. A Creative drummer pulls his fills from the music.....from either the guitar, keyboard, singer or bass player and in this way the rolls that are created are NEWeverytime and are in harmony with the music, adding another dimension to the overallsound being created. This is the path that every drummer eventually hasto go down in order to evolve and become a creative drummer musician with a styleof their own. If not they will remain a BEATKEEPER until they do.

These videoswill start with a
CRASH COURSE and will have beginners, even people who have never played, being able to play thedrums on the FIRST DAY and will include how to use the bass drum pedals and hold the sticks for max performance. It will take you thru a series of not just boring drum exercises but willteach you to pull your own drum rolls and fills from the music you hear andwant to play. In fact it will teach you to be a CREATIVE drummer.....so if you are a BEATKEEPER and want to evolve into something more or even if you are a complete beginner, neversat at a drum kit before.....then this will be a great asset for you and yourplaying.
